You've got to read the update on the eagle family. Baby just pulled a salmon out of the river and is eating it.
Out of my cabin window I see a flurry of activity and a big black wing in the air. The wing looks like it may be more than two feet in length. I take a closer look; it’s baby eagle and he’s forcibly pulling a salmon out of the river. At first I was wondering if he was hurt the way he was leaning to one side, but then I realized he was standing at a slant trying to lift the heavy weight of the salmon out of the river. I flew to my camera and out the back door (by the way it’s thirteen degrees above zero) so it’s quite chilly out there. I snapped pictures of baby eating and watched camp robbers and ravens start coming in to share the meal. I heard chirping and looked to my left and saw mom in a tree watching baby eat. She was probably keeping guard.
After baby had eaten for approximately a half hour, mom came swooping in like a big rush. Baby eagle was knocked into the river and mom started eating the salmon. I watched baby slowly pull himself out of the river to the snow bank to the left of mom. I was standing outside when this happened so I pulled up my camera to take a picture and it wouldn’t work. The batteries were dead. Probably the cold weather didn’t help matters. I rushed inside, changed the batteries, and out the door to see baby eagle fly up in the air and land on a limp on the other side of the river. This was to much for mom so she picked up the salmon and flew down the river with it. Blood is allover the snow where the salmon was lying and now the camp robbers and ravens are coming in closer to see if any pieces were left for them.
Less than thirty minutes goes by and I decide to take a picture out of the front cabin window. The Alphen glow from the sunset coming through the snow covered trees in just beautiful and I thought you would like to see the beauty as well. Just as I get ready to take the picture, there’s baby eagle perched in the tree he was in earlier, with the Alphen glow behind him. I smile and take some shots. As I’m shooting Dusty says, “the eagle’s are in the back yard tree again”. So I go out back and I see mom in one tree right in front of me only 80 feet away and dad in a tree to the right. My guess is they took the salmon back to their nest and now they are hunting for more. Ha ha, it's hunting when your in the tree and it's fishing when your pulling one out of the river.
Right now it’s 3:50 pm Alaska time and the sun is almost set, it will be dark within the hour.
That’s all for now folks. : o ) Another wonderful day in the wilderness of Alaska.
